The perfect marriage? As I was wandering through the pits a couple of hours before the races on opening night I stopped to talk with one of the late model drivers I consider a good friend. During our conversation, he looked toward driver Mark Burgtorf and his car owner, Rick Frankel, who both were busy prepping the No. 33B. Frankel is a gifted a engine builder and Burgtorf is … well, Burgtorf. “Those guys,” my friend said, “are going to win a lot of races this year.” I think it’s fair to say that’s the general consensus in the late model portion of the pits, and I think it has been since the offseason announcement that Burgtorf and Frankel were officially teaming up for 2015. Both Burgtorf and Frankel seem equipped to handle the unavoidable pressure that comes with such a union. For Burgtorf, it’s a perfect situation. He has more time to watch his son, Cale, play baseball and swing a golf club. |

“As far as the (time-consuming) car preparation is concerned, Rick will be handling most of that … he likes that,” Burgtorf said. Rick Frankel concentrates as he works on the No. 33 late model with driver Mark Burgtorf.
Burgtorf said he can’t thank the Frankel family enough for making such an opportunity possible. That gratitude stretches back to late in the 2014 season when Burgtorf was battling Denny Woodworth for the track title. Some late-season car woes left Burgtorf potentially standing on the sideline — until Frankel came to the rescue with a loaner ride.
The rest, as they say, is history. Burgtorf drove that loaner car to his 15th track championship. Shortly afterward, the Burgtorf-Frankel superteam was born.
Frankel, always a fan of Burgtorf’s, is excited, too. “I’ve thought the world of him for a long time,” Frankel said. But Frankel admits there is also a twinge of bittersweetness. He has always had one or both of his sons, Jason or Ricky, piloting his cars. Frankel said family responsibilities and other reasons found both Ricky and Jason (who won the 2008 track title) stepping away from the sport.
But Rick still had the desire to race, and now he arguably has the greatest driver in track history behind the wheel of one of his cars. Frankel vows the car underneath Burgtorf will never be lacking for anything — including horsepower. And how much horsepower is that, Rick? “850,” he said. Yeah, that’s pretty impressive.
Burgtorf and Frankel will be running regularly at Quincy, Tri-City and Pevely, plus some special events like selected UMP Hell Tour races. “I’d like to win 20 features this year,” Burgtorf said. Frankel nods, and thinks that is a reasonable goal. So does just about everyone else.

September 21st, 2014 - After a more than a month away from the track Jake Griffin returned to action on Sunday night with a United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Modified event at Quincy Raceway (Quincy, Illinois).
A field of thirteen entries took part in the event, and a fifth to second run in his heat race sent Griffin to the feature in the fifth starting spot. Jake would go on to finish sixth in the finale behind race winner, Steven Delonjay, Brian Lynn, Shawn Deering, Jared Schlipman, and Chris Spalding. "I can't thank everyone enough who helped us get back out there," said Griffin. "A big thanks goes out to Rick Frankel for all the motor help and getting it dialed in for us. It really felt great being back out there." Credit: Quincy Raceways |

Two First Time Winners at Quincy Raceways The biggest on track news of the past week has been the pairing of car owner Rick Frankel and 14 time track champion Mark Burgtorf. Two weeks ago, Mark broke a rod in his engine, apparently bringing his hard luck season to an early end. About the same time, Rickey Frankel decided to step away from driving for a while. So a call went out, and the new team hit the track this weekend. The # 33F hit the track for the first time Friday night at Tri City Speedway , collecting a runner up finish. Sunday night Mark followed up with incredibly, his first feature win of 2014. |
